Jetski Tubbys, Jetwings, Pontoons & Buoyancy Certificate Requirements
Updated Information for South African Jetski Owners
If you have fitted Tubbys, Jetwings, Pontoons, Side Pods, Fast Pods, or any similar flotation/storage system to your Jetski, you now require a new Buoyancy Certificate for those additions which the Buoyancy of the Pods and Jetski are on the same Buoyancy Certificate.
In South Africa, a valid Buoyancy Certificate is required before your Jetski can pass its COF — Certificate of Fitness annual inspection.
Do Tubbys, Jetwings or Pontoons Need a Separate Buoyancy Certificate?
From around 2017, Jetski owners were required to have the new style Buoyancy Certificate for aftermarket flotation systems such as:
- Tubbys
- Jetwings
- Pontoons
- Side Pods
- Fast Pods
- Other aftermarket flotation or storage pods
These certificates must be supplied by a manufacturer and endorsed according to SAMSA requirements.
The reason for this is simple: the manufacturer must be able to prove that the Jetski will remain buoyant and safe, even if the Tubbys, Jetwings, or Pods become flooded.

Category R Is “Recommended” However most Parks controlled by Ezemvelo and maybe other organizations do require a Buoyancy Certificate.
Category R Inland water vessels Minimum 30% Buoyancy
Category D Sea going vessels 60% Minimum Buoyancy
Category E Sea going vessels 60% Minimum Buoyancy
Materials used alter the length of the Buoyancy Validity High Density Foam 5 Years Polystyrene or Bottles 1 Year
Why Is This Required?
When you add aftermarket Pods or Pontoons to a Jetski, you are altering the vessel’s buoyancy and structure.
SAMSA needs to be satisfied that the craft will still float correctly and remain safe if those added components fill with water.
One of the ways a manufacturer may prove this is through a Jetski drop test.
This involves dropping a similar Jetski into seawater from a height of approximately 2 metres to demonstrate the flotation performance of the craft and fitted pods.
I personally witnessed one of these tests with Monty, who manufactured Jetwings. It is definitely not for the faint-hearted!
What Must the Jetski Owner Do?
If your Jetski is fitted with Tubbys, Jetwings, Pontoons, Side Pods, or similar products, you should contact a manufacturer and request a copy of the relevant Buoyancy Certificate. They last 5 years and then need renewing.
This certificate should then be kept with your COF paperwork.
In most cases, your COF examiner will want to see proof that both the Jetski and the fitted aftermarket pods are covered.
Standard Jetski Buoyancy Certificates
When a Jetski is new, the original manufacturer normally issues a vessel-wide Buoyancy Certificate for that model.
This certificate applies to the specific model range, but your unique HIN — Hull Identification Number must be printed or written on the certificate.
The HIN is used to identify your specific craft.
Lost Your Jetski Buoyancy Certificate?

There was a SAMSA Marine Notice, MN18 of 2015, that created confusion around Jetskis fitted with Tubbys, Jetwings, Fast Pods, Pontoons, and similar aftermarket products.
The notice indicated that where these products are fitted, approval may be required from both:
- The original Jetski manufacturer, such as Yamaha, Sea-Doo, Kawasaki, or Honda.
- The pod or pontoon manufacturer, such as Racetech, Jetwings, Fast Power Sports, Hooked Up Motorsports, or other relevant manufacturers.
When the notice was first issued, it caused confusion and temporarily affected the issuing of Buoyancy Certificates by SAMSA-appointed agents.
However, common sense eventually prevailed, especially during the busy December COF period, and many examiners continued issuing COFs using the original buoyancy documentation until further clarification.
